Friday April 29: Last Day for Writing Center Services, Spring semester

Library Congratulates Honored Faculty

Congratulations to all who were honored this year:

University honors faculty: Liu, McEntire receive President’s Medal

As Indiana State University prepares to award degrees to spring 2011 graduates in little more than a week, university leaders paused Thursday (April 28) to honor those who helped prepare those graduates.

Four receive Caleb Mills Teaching Award

Liz Brown, associate professor of math education; Al Finch, professor of physical education; Nancy Nichols-Pethick, associate professor of art; and Don Rogers, assoiciate professor of recreation and sport management, were honored.

Dreiser Award presented to professors Shelden, Tuttle

Michael Shelden, professor of English, and Elaina Tuttle, professor of biology, received the award in recognition of outstanding contributions to their disciplines.

Nursing professor Fine, economist Guell receive Faculty Distinguished Service Award

faculty members Julia Fine, associate professor of advanced practice nursing, and Robert Guell, professor of economics, were recognized Thursday (April 28) with the university’s Faculty Distinguished Service Award.

Bauserman receives Community-Based Learning and Scholarship Award

Kathryn Bauserman, associate professor of elementary, early childhood and special education, received the Community-Based Learning and Scholarship Award Thursday (April 28) during the university’s annual Faculty Recognition Banquet

ISU alum brings Navajo culture to library: April 29

ISU alumna [and library student assistant in Systems] Kristin Monts, who teaches eighth grade writing in the Navajo Nation in Pinion, Arizona, is bringing some of her students to experience Indiana and Indiana State. As part of that experience, the students will expose ISU students to their culture at 3:30 p.m. April 28 in the Cunningham Memorial Library’s Events Area.

Students will discuss Navajo culture and community and education. Students also will discuss the kinaalda, a coming-of-age ceremony for girls, the life of a Navajo boy as well as the jingle dress.

The presentation is free and open to the community.

New functionality for OvidSP databases

OvidSP was upgraded today. This affects the following databases:

  • Mental Measurements Yearbook
  • Social Work Abstracts
  • NASW Clinical Register
  • overall “Journals@Ovid” platform

According to the provider, the upgrades are as follows:

Updates Include:

  • Added functionality to hide older book editions when a new edition is subscribed to or purchased
  • Search term highlighting included in Print Preview
  • Exported items now support links via XLR tools

Additionally, you will see an overall improved performance around AutoAlert results, jumpstarts, My Projects, My Workspace, and deposit account access.

Turnitin Upset Again

Cunningham Memorial Library advises the campus that tech support at iParadigms – the company that runs Turnitin, the plagiarism detector – is reporting server problems. You may experience very slow response times or be unable to access Turnitin. They are working on the problem and will get it working again as soon as possible. Questions? EBSCOhost Electronic Journal Service (EJS) links Downtime April 29-May 1

EBSCOhost Electronic Journal Service (EJS) links will be unavailable from Friday, 29 April 2011 at 8:00 p.m. EST through Sunday, 1 May 2011 at 1:00 p.m. EST due to a scheduled system upgrade by the vendor.

EBSCOhost EJS links are displayed as “EBSCOhost” in search results on the Electronic Resources homepage (E-Journal Portal). Please see an example in the image below:

 This upgrade should not affect EBSCO databases such as Academic Search Premier, only links to individual EBSCOhost electronic journals.

Writing Center to close 3 p.m. April 29

 The Writing Center consultants are also students and need time to study for their finals; therefore, the Writing Center will close for the spring semester 3 p.m. Friday, April 29. Please plan accordingly and make your appointments to visit the Writing Center early.

Deadline for distance learners to submit papers is 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 26. Papers submitted after this date have no guarantee of being reviewed and completed by the closing date of April 29.

The Writing Center reopens Tuesday, May 17 at 10 a.m. Summer hours are posted at http://isu.indstate.edu/writing/hours.html.

Joy Castro, author of The Truth Book, will be making two presentations at Indiana State today (Tuesday, April 19).

Joy Castro, author of The Truth Book, will be making two presentations at Indiana State today (Tuesday, April 19). At 12:30, she will be speaking on “Your Body, Your Voice: Human Rights Now,” as part of Human Rights Day activities. Her lecture will take place in Hulman Memorial Student Union Room 321

At 3:30, she will be reading from The Truth Book, as well as her forthcoming novel and collection of short stories in Root Hall A-264. Book signings will be held at both locations after the presentations. Her memoir recounts being adopted into a Jehovah’s Witness home that became abusive when her mother remarried. She tells of her struggles with religion, with domestic violence, and with getting an education as a single parent. She eventually earned a Ph.D. at Texas A&M University and now teaches at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In 2009, she was named one of the Best New Latino Writers. She has worked in programs that help provide higher education to at-risk teenagers and victims of domestic abuse. Her vist to the ISU campus is sponsored by Interdisciplinary Programs (International Studies, Liberal Studies, Women’s Studies), University Honors, the Office of the President, Bayh College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, Human Rights Day, the Center for Health, Religion, and Spirituality, and the departments of English; Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics, and Social Work.
