Joy Castro, author of The Truth Book, will be making two presentations at Indiana State today (Tuesday, April 19). At 12:30, she will be speaking on “Your Body, Your Voice: Human Rights Now,” as part of Human Rights Day activities. Her lecture will take place in Hulman Memorial Student Union Room 321

At 3:30, she will be reading from The Truth Book, as well as her forthcoming novel and collection of short stories in Root Hall A-264. Book signings will be held at both locations after the presentations. Her memoir recounts being adopted into a Jehovah’s Witness home that became abusive when her mother remarried. She tells of her struggles with religion, with domestic violence, and with getting an education as a single parent. She eventually earned a Ph.D. at Texas A&M University and now teaches at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. In 2009, she was named one of the Best New Latino Writers. She has worked in programs that help provide higher education to at-risk teenagers and victims of domestic abuse. Her vist to the ISU campus is sponsored by Interdisciplinary Programs (International Studies, Liberal Studies, Women’s Studies), University Honors, the Office of the President, Bayh College of Education, the College of Arts and Sciences, Human Rights Day, the Center for Health, Religion, and Spirituality, and the departments of English; Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics, and Social Work.
