Question: Why do you shelve your DVDs that way?

DVDs at the library

Recently, someone left us a comment:

Put your DVDs in a better order. Example: Horror, Action, Cartoons, Romance, Mystery, etc.

Let me begin by explaining how the DVDs are currently shelved. We have six main sections. First, are the new arrivals – things we recently purchased. Next are the feature films in alphabetical order. If you walk around the corner, you’ll find a section for TV Series, Documentaries, Animation, and Foreign Films also in alphabetical order.

So, why don’t we shelve them by genre? Well, the explanation is simple – alphabetical order and really broad categories make things easier to find. That’s the bottom line.

While shelving things by genre (romcom, action, western, scifi, etc.) can be helpful when you are browsing, it’s rather a nightmare to put things back in the right place, and to find things when someone wants a specific title.

Interim Library Dean: Greg Youngen

Posted by isulib on August 21, 2013

Provost Biff Williams has named an Indiana State University alumnus as the interim dean of the Cunningham Memorial Library.

Gregory Youngen will serve for the 2013-14 academic year as interim dean while the university conducts a nationwide search to fill the position. Alberta Comer left the position to become dean and director of the Willard Marriott Library and university librarian at the University of Utah.

Williams said Youngen has the experience to lead the library during this time of transition.

“We are excited and pleased that Greg has accepted the role of interim dean of the Cunningham Memorial Library,” Williams said. “He was a unanimous decision by the library faculty and staff, which speaks volumes about the respect he has earned from his colleagues. ”

Youngen said he looks forward to serving as the interim dean.  “The former dean left the library in excellent shape and we’re ready for the fall semester,” he said. “The library has some exciting events planned and will be introducing new services this year.”

Among the first events will be the Women’s Equality Day Reception on Aug. 26 and the 11th annual Extravaganza on Sept. 12. New services include the revamped Math and Writing Center on the second floor and the new Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence on the first floor.

“We anticipate both of these offices will be bringing in new users for the library’s services and collections,” he said.

Youngen graduated from Indiana State with his bachelor’s in journalism in 1982 and from Indiana University with his master’s in library science in 1983. Before returning to Indiana State in 2012 as the associate dean of library services, Youngen spent 16 years at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana working his way to associate professor of library administration. He also has experience at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, the University of Chicago and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

New Wireless Network (SSID) to Begin Broadcasting on Friday, August 9, 2013

Posted by isulib on August 9, 2013

The Library often has ISU and non-ISU people trying to get onto the wireless network. Here is an update.

What is happening?
OIT will begin broadcasting a new wireless network (SSID) called ISU-WIFI-SETUP on Friday August 9, 2013. The new wireless network is designed to help new and returning students connect to the ISU wireless network by providing them access to a webpage with directions on configuring their laptop and other mobile devices.

Why is this change being made?
The new ISU-WIFI-SETUP is being broadcast to make it easier for new and returning students to connect to the ISU wireless network. The self-help webpage will guide students through connecting to the ISU wireless network without having to seek technical assistance. You can view the webpage at

This does not have any impact on current wireless connections on campus.

If someone has contact with students that need access to the wireless network, the students should be directed to connect to the new wireless network (ISU-WIFI-SETUP) and follow the instructions. If they still need assistance connecting, direct them to the Student Computer Support Center (SCSC) located in Stalker Hall room 009.

Questions or concerns: contact the IT Help Desk at 812-237-2910.
