Recognition for Charitable Works

Posted by isulib on December 19, 2016

The Library hosted a collection site for the Staff Council’s donation drive to gather winter hats, gloves and scarves for some Vigo County elementary schools (see earlier blog post). The drive ended Dec. 1 and the library collected a wagon load of winter things for children in our community.

The Council wanted to say “Thank You” to all who donated to this drive at our location and gave the library a commemorative holiday ornament for display.

The ornament is hanging on the tree in the Library Administrative Office.

Library Student Assistants Graduate in December

Posted by isulib on December 19, 2016

Two library student assistants received post-graduate degrees on Saturday, December 17th!

  • Samuel Komera, a Graduate Assistant in Special Collections, was supervised by Cinda May and Kendra McCrea and worked with them for about a year.  Samuel received his Master’s Degree in Computer Science on Saturday, December 17th.  He’s from Telanger, Hyderabad, India and his work in Special Collections was focused mostly on revamping the department’s web page.
  • Ramya Sree Matcha was a student assistant in the Interlibrary Loan unit of Technical Services. She worked in that area for the past 3 semesters under Holli Moseman’s supervision.  Ramya, who is originally from Khaman, India, received her Master’s Degree in Electronics and Computer Technology.

Congratulations to both of these fine students!

Posted by isulib on November 1, 2016

The Reference/Instruction librarians are busy year-round providing instruction sessions to undergrads, grads, and faculty, as well as high school groups. Online work includes building online research guides (libguides.indstate.edu) or working in course Blackboard sites.

The library provides many ways to get research help and reference questions asked, as well as questions about checked out items, overdue bills, printing, and just helping people find library materials.

Nov. 7 in the FCTE: student success scholar to speak

Posted by isulib on November 1, 2016

11am in the Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence

Mary Murphy from the Indiana University department of psychological and brain sciences, will return to ISU to present her latest research with strong student success implications for an event sponsored by the Office of Student Success and the ISU Student Success Council.

The talk focuses on What We Say Matters: New Research on How Student Performance Feedback Can Impact Their Future Effort.

Murphy is the principal investigator, Mind and Identity in Context Lab, and an external consultant for the ISU First-in-the-World Grant.

Murphy’s research is on how student feedback on assignments impacts their future effort and performance. She and her team developed and field tested a feedback intervention that shows promise for stimulating students to greater effort, rather than what sometimes happens, self-doubt about their capability to master content and for some, dropping a class or underperforming in the course.

Murphy will also discuss preliminary results from a similar study focused on students who are placed on academic probation and ways in which changes to probation letter wording and/or similar communication can be used to trigger higher performance and greater positive outcomes.
