The Reference/Instruction librarians are busy year-round providing instruction sessions to undergrads, grads, and faculty, as well as high school groups. Online work includes building online research guides (libguides.indstate.edu) or working in course Blackboard sites.
The library provides many ways to get research help and reference questions asked, as well as questions about checked out items, overdue bills, printing, and just helping people find library materials.

Karen Evans (Reference/Instruction librarian, Public Services Department) has been selected to participate in ALA’s Association of College & Research Libraries’ Instruction Section Mentoring Program. As a mentor Karen will be matched up with a librarian who is new to instruction or to the ACRL’s Instruction Section so that the neophyte can improve his or her teaching skills and confidence in the classroom. Mentors for the program are chosen for their experience and passion for teaching.
Karen is one of the library’s most active instructors. Among her current teaching projects is “Murder, Mystery, and Mayhem.” The twice weekly, 75 minute University 101 class will consist of equal parts of information literacy and criminal justice.

Brian Bunnett (Chair, Public Services Department) has received a grant of $23,666 from the National Library of Medicine to examine the role of librarians in disaster management and emergency response. Brian will serve as the Principal Investigator of the grant and Dr. Dorene Hojnicki, Director of the Vigo County Emergency Management Agency, will act as the Investigator.
Brian has already begun attending meetings of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security District 7 Task Force and ISU’s Emergency Response Team, and will soon join other local cognate groups. At these meetings he will conduct surveys, focus groups, selective interviews, and critical incident analyses to determine the information and training needs of disaster management and emergency response personnel. Training sessions highlighting various National Library of Medicine resources are expected to follow.
The grant allocates $9,000 for the purchase of disaster management monographs and other resources that will be added to the collection of the CML and $3,000 for travel to the 2015 Preparedness, Emergency Response, and Recovery Consortium and Exhibition in Orlando most notably.

Reference/Instruction (Public Services) librarian Cheryl Blevens has accepted an appointment to the Editorial Board of the Journal of Library & Information Services in Distance Learning, a Taylor & Francis Imprint of Routledge Publishing. JLISDL is a refereed journal that addresses the issues and concerns of librarians and information specialists in the rapidly growing field of Distance Education. Her position will begin with the issues for volume 8 (2014).

The public face of the Library is its various service points, represented by our Circulation/Reserve counter, our Reference Desk with its big red neon ASK? sign, plus the OIT Student Desk – all on the 1st floor of the Library, as well as Special Collections (3d floor) and the Math and Writing Center (now reporting to Student Success, newly merged and now located on the 2nd floor). As of July 1, 2012, the Circulation and Reference/Instruction departments were merged into the new Public Services Department, complete with a new Department Chair (Brian Bunnett). Now comes the process for making this all work. Mr. Bunnett has created the Public Services’ Project Planning Team (Andrea Boehme, Carey Sturgeon, Karen Evans, SteveHardin, and himself), and the first meeting took place August 27.
The purpose of this team is to create a plan that will govern how the department’s desk integration project will unfold. All members of the Public Services Department will eventually participate in this project. They will conduct an evidence-based, data-intensive examination of desk operations here at the CML as well as at other libraries. Based on this research they will, in May 2014, present a series of recommendations to library administration about triaging our references services, integrating our various desks, training, and assessment. The Project Planning Team will do its best to keep the rest of the library well informed as the project proceeds.
