Toys For Tots Gets Boost from Tech Services

Posted by isulib on December 19, 2016

For the second year, instead of exchanging gifts, Tech Services staff opted to buy toys for the “Toys for Tots” program. We were one of several drop-off site on campus and it was a huge success. We gathered 42 toys for the Marines’ annual toy drive. They came to pick them up on Dec. 9th.

They wanted to know if we wanted to be a collection site again next year and we told them YES!  They remembered us from last year!

Many thanks to everyone who helped make the holidays brighter for children in our community!

Library Student Assistants Graduate in December

Posted by isulib on December 19, 2016

Two library student assistants received post-graduate degrees on Saturday, December 17th!

  • Samuel Komera, a Graduate Assistant in Special Collections, was supervised by Cinda May and Kendra McCrea and worked with them for about a year.  Samuel received his Master’s Degree in Computer Science on Saturday, December 17th.  He’s from Telanger, Hyderabad, India and his work in Special Collections was focused mostly on revamping the department’s web page.
  • Ramya Sree Matcha was a student assistant in the Interlibrary Loan unit of Technical Services. She worked in that area for the past 3 semesters under Holli Moseman’s supervision.  Ramya, who is originally from Khaman, India, received her Master’s Degree in Electronics and Computer Technology.

Congratulations to both of these fine students!

Thanksgiving Baskets Donated

Posted by isulib on November 29, 2016

thanksgivingbaskets

The call went out from the Fundraising Committee to Library staff in early November to once again donate items for Thanksgiving baskets for the Foster Grandparents program.

“The Foster Grandparent Program is a nonprofit composed of low-income seniors who spend their weekdays at local schools and daycares.  They provide a positive influence on the children that they work with, oftentimes being rewarded with flowers by their classrooms as a “thank you” for doing such a good job.  These are not just normal volunteers.  These people want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They understand that some of these children do not have a role model at home, and these grandparents are there for them.  One of the biggest rewards these volunteers receive is just being called “Grandma” and “Grandpa.”  To someone who may not have grandchildren, this might just be the catalyst for them to keep helping out.” (Quote from the donation letter)

The standard basket list:

Item description Number needed
8 – 10 lb. Turkey 3
5 lb. Bag of potatoes 3
Box of Dressing 3
Can of Corn 6
Can of Green Beans 6
Packet of Gravy 6
Can of Cranberry Sauce 3
Package of Rolls or loaf of Bread 3
Jell-O Cheesecake Mix 3

Other items and cash were accepted as well. Our original goal was 3 baskets; however, we were able to fill and deliver 5 !  Included in the baskets were the baskets, turkey, rolls, potatoes, boxed dressing, green beans, corn, peas, cranberry sauce, carrots, gravy packets (turkey and Brown), cheese cake, sweet potatoes, pie crust, pumpkin, marshmallows, Swiss Miss, rice, mac & cheese, candy, and a tablecloth.

Posted by isulib on September 19, 2016

Emerging Technologies librarian Heather Rayl has had a busy summer, helping a Communication Department team convert the Comm 101 textbook into an Open Education Resource text.

The next workshop will be held Tuesday September 20, 2016 in the Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence, Library room 103, 3-4pm.

Promo: Are you frustrated with your textbook? Are you looking for ways to inject more custom materials into your class? Then Open Educational Resources might be the answer for you! Light refreshments will be served.

For more information, contact Heather.Rayl@indstate.edu or call (812) 237-2150
